Obesity is not only an increase in fat in the organism, but it is also a chronic disease, which is connected to a number of different disorders. Obesity is called an epidemic of the 3rd century. According to the estimate made in 2000, 300 million people worldwide suffered from this problem. Nowadays obesity is not only a problem of highly developed countries, but it also involves developing countries and it even exists in areas where it was unique in the past (China, Thailand, Brazil).
The main reasons for the origin of obesity are disproportion between energy intake and expenditure, genetic predisposition, hormonal disorders, metabolic effects, drugs, psychogenic factors and eating habits. Obesity can increase the risk of formation and development of a number of diseases e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, some kinds of cancer and arthritis of the major joints.
Obesity must not be underrated and it is necessary to start treatment as soon as possible. It is essential to visit a specialist, who can define the reasons for obesity and recommend a suitable method of treatment consisting of a total change in lifestyle, eating habits and implementation of physical exercise. In very serious cases pharmacotherapy or possibly a gastric band surgery is recommended.
