World First Full Face Transplant Plastic Surgery Patient Meets The Press,
The first man ever to have a full face transplant met the worlds press yesterday.
The man, known simply as Oscar, suffered from severe facial injuries after accidentally shooting himself in the face in 2005. He has now had a transplant of complete facial skin and muscles, eyelids, nose, lips, upper jaw, all teeth, the palate, cheekbones and lower jaw. The operation took 22 hours. Most plastic surgery procedures such as breast enlargement, tummy tuck and liposuction only take 1 hour.
It will take at least 18 months of therapy to regain 90% of the control of his new face, but he struggled to speak to the press yesterday, saying “I’m very happy to be here and I wanted to express my gratitude to the hospital and medical team and to all donors in Spain, especially the family of the man whose face I received.”
