Spain has banned cosmetic surgery adverts before 10pm.  The ban also includes adverts for slimming and beauty products.

This step is the most recent in an ongoing campaign by the Spanish government against the so called “cult of the body”.  Spain has the highest number of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures such as liposuction and breast augmentation in Europe and a large number of cases of anorexia and bulimia.

Other steps the Spanish government have already taken is to ban zero sized models on catwalks during fashion week and stopped clothing shops from using the smallest size of dummies.

According to a recently published report, over 17 million Americans had plastic surgery last year.

Despite the economic downturn, demand for some cosmetic surgery procedures rose considerably.  Nose operation rose 74% compared to the previous year and facelifts rose 44%.  Tummy tucks also rose considerably in popularity, as did gastric band surgery.

Non invasive procedures such as skin peels and botox increased sharply, possibly because people are opting for these less expensive treatments during the economic downturn.

Breast augmentation remains the most popular procedure for women, and rhinoplasty, or ‘nose jobs’ are the most popular amongst men.

A recent study published by The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has revealed that almost half of Americans approve of cosmetic plastic surgery such as Liposuction and almost a quarter would consider it themselves.

There was a 14% difference between the approval quotient of the richest and poorest, with 62% of the richest approving of cosmetic surgery and only 48% of the poorest approving.

The study also showed that almost three quarters of women and two thirds of men would not be embarrassed if people knew they had cosmetic surgery.

A group of Canadian plastic surgeons are traveling to Malaysia in order to provide free plastic surgery.

The team will not be providing cosmetic procedures such as breast augmentation or tummy tuck, and they are also not expecting to perform any gastric bands.  Instead, the surgeons will be performing facial reconstruction surgery on the poor

“Our aim is to assist the poor, especially the young children, to lead a normal life again.”

The charitable workers from British Columbia University are expected to arrive in Penang in November.

A recent survey of 928 US plastic surgeons has revealed a drop in the number of Plastic Surgery Procedures.

Despite the increase in popularity and cultural acceptance of plastic surgery, the overall number of surgical procedures appears to have dropped by 2% over the last year.

The biggest drop was in major surgeries such as liposuction, tummy tuck and gastric band which fell in number by 17% to 1.5 million procedures.

Part of the reason for the reduction could be the economic crisis, with potential patients either putting off surgery for more a financially secure time or opting for lesser cosmetic procedures such as injections or skin peels. The number of these ‘non invasive procedures’ rose 231% in the same period.

One possible other reason is the rise of so called ‘cosmetic surgery tourism’, where patients, attracted by lower prices, travel abroad for surgery.

Sharon Osbourne has said that she is happy that she had plastic surgery and will consider getting more in the future.

In a recent interview the 57 year old Britain’s Got Talent judge said: “I had my facelift nine years ago and a couple of years ago I had all my jowly bits removed, but I’d never mess with my eyes or mouth. I’ve got good skin, but then it’s never been out in the sun. When people say women should grow old gracefully, I’m like ‘Shut up!’” adding: “I like to feel nice for Ozzy. God knows he stuck by me all those years when I looked like a bin-bag. Would I have another facelift? Yes.”

So what surgery might Sharon get?  She is obviously not a candidate for a gastric band or tummy tuck, but in the future she might consider liposuction, facial filler etc.

Recent research made by TENA Lady confirms that women feel pressure to look good despite an increase in media proclaiming the importance of ‘inner beauty’.

53% of women in the study feel that they are judged on their physical appearance when they meet someone for the first time.  The judging of appearance is one of the reasons people opt for plastic surgery such as liposuction, gastric band, tummy tuck or breast augmentation.

The figure of 53% includes encounters with both men and women.  The report does not reveal if women feel more pressure when meeting men or other women.  The report also did not investigate pressure men feel to look good.

Hair transplantation is growing in popularity, with an annual increase of over 20%.

A hair transplant is a cosmetic surgery consisting of the moving of hair follicles from one area to the bald area desired to be treated.  The procedure takes only one day and results can be seen in about a month, with the latest techniques promising no scarring or pain.

Unlike other plastic surgery procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck and gastric band that mainly attract women, those seeking hair transplants are mostly men.

Despite a widely held belief that Hollywood is populated by cosmetically enhanced actors, none of this years nominees are confirmed to have had plastic surgery.

Speculation abounds about which potential winners may have been under the knife.  Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz are both widely suspected to have had cosmetic procedures, Bullock possibly having Botox and Cruz believed to have had rhinoplasty.

The question is, have this years Oscar nominees shunned plastic surgery such as liposuction or simply not admitted to it.

Gabourey Sidibe has recently shot to fame thanks to her new role in Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire, despite never before appearing in a film.

Sidibe does not adhere to the normal Hollywood actress appearance and she does not appear to have had any plastic surgery.  Now that she is a Hollywood star the question is will she follow the lead of other such stars and go under the knife?

If she did want to go for cosmetic surgery she might want to get a gastric band and tummy tuck before doing so, as her current weight could prevent her from getting other surgery.
