The number of male chest reduction procedures carried out last year grew by 7% compared to the previous year.

The increase is part of an overall rise in the percentage of plastic surgery that is carried out on men.  Other fast growing surgeries include tummy tuck, which was up by 15% on the previous year and male liposuction, up 8%.  These increases could be due to high obesity levels, which have also led to many more people opting for gastric band surgery.

A new study into the effects of weight loss surgery suggests that such surgery can provide a marked improvement in cardiovascular health.

Researchers found reduced amounts of fat in the bloodstream and reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.  The huge take up of gastric band surgery has led to a large number of studies into the long term effects of such surgery, although many, including this one, are on a small scale.  Similar small studies have also found health benefits provided by cosmetic surgery including liposuction, which also appears to reduce the amount of fat in the blood stream.

The wrinkle reduction injectable, Botox, increased in popularity slower than traditional cosmetic surgery such as breast enlargement, tummy tuck or liposuction.

Botox has famously outperformed traditional cosmetic surgery procedures over the past few years, but figures for 2011 show that sales of Botox actually increased at a slower rate of 7% compared to traditional plastic surgery which rose 10%.

Some suggest that this could be due to a backlog of people who put off procedures such as face and neck lift when the recession struck, in favour of cheaper, temporary treatments such as Botox.

Hit show ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ could be responsible for boosting the UK economy by £1.4 billion, it is claimed.

Non surgical cosmetic surgery treatments such as Botox, fillers and chemical peels are predicted to rise faster than traditional plastic surgery such as tummy tuck and liposuction.

Non surgical cosmetic surgery rose by 6% last year, and is expected to rise at a greater rate during 2012.  Men make up an increasingly large percentage of both surgical and non-surgical procedures.  One factor is thought to be increasing rates of obesity, which has also lead to a greater number of people considering weight loss surgery such as gastric band.

43,069 cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck and breast enlargement where carried out in the UK last year, compared to 38,274 the previous year.

This number does not include the rising number of people from the UK who are travelling abroad in search of cosmetic surgery, as well as dental and weight loss surgery such as gastric band.

7% more women had tummy tuck plastic surgery last year, compared to the year before.

As well as rising tummy tuck cosmetic surgery for women, men opted for 15% more tummy tuck last year.  Men are now reported to make up 20% of the overall number of plastic surgery procedures carried out.

Obesity is thought to be a major contributing factor in the rising popularity of tummy tuck and liposuction procedures.  Although these are not true weight loss surgeries like a gastric band, they can deal with stubborn areas of fat and loose skin.

The north east of England has a 25% rate of obesity, it has been revealed.  This means that a quarter of people living in the area are suitable candidates for weight loss surgery such as a gastric band.

The UK has one of the worst rates of obesity in Europe, with Scotland the worst affected area. UK citizens are also more likely than their fellow Europeans to undergo plastic surgery such a liposuction, tummy tuck and breast enlargement.

Joan Rivers has undergone cosmetic surgery on television, to improve the appearance of her neck.

The comedienne is seen for the first time without make-up on the show, before being taken through to undergo plastic surgery to tighten up the skin on her neck.  Although the exact details of the surgery are unclear, a combination of neck lift and liposuction is possible.
