This is a surgical operation, which is carried out using a laparoscopic technique. It is performed under general anaesthesia and during this operation a band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. By tightening this band the stomach is divided into two parts, which causes an earlier sensation of fullness and also reduces the quantity of food that can be eaten. A patient does not lose his/her appetite, but without a sensation of hunger the daily intake of food is reduced and gradually he/she manages to lose weight.
This operation is suitable mainly for people who suffer from obesity and are excessively overweight; for patients, who are at increased risk of other serious diseases or for those who already suffer from these diseases.
Patients, who have undergone this operation, can initially achieve a weight loss of 2 to 10 kg per month. International statistics show that during the first year patients lose on average 40% of their total volume of excess weight.
